北日本の重要な水産資源の1つであるサケ(シロザケ)は、川で産まれた稚魚が海に降りて成長・成熟すると産まれた川(母川)に戻るという「母川回帰」をします。この特徴的な習性を利用して、人工ふ化放流事業が盛んに行われ、定置網漁業も成り立っています。この母川回帰終盤での母川の識別には、母川に特有なニオイを稚魚の時に憶え、それを頼りに母川を探すと言う「母川刷込」が行われています。この母川刷込や母川想起する時期のサケの鼻や脳の状態を細胞レベルや分子レベルで把握し、どのようなメカニズムでいつ憶え・思い出しているのか探ろうとしています。併せて、サケの回遊に伴う、生活史やカラダの変化にも着目し、耳石微量元素による回遊履歴や二次性徴形質等についても生態生理学的に調べています。サケが好きな人は一緒に研究してみませんか?
