教員からのメッセージ
大学において最も重要なのは新しく魅力的な問題を発見する能力を身につけることです。自ら問題を発見しそれを解決する手法を探す能力を身につけてください。
 私は海洋学において、海鳥というちょっと変わった生物を材料にしています。海鳥は、海中と空中という密度の大きく異なる媒体中での生活に適応した、このサイズの生物としては、極めて特異なグループです。生物に働く主たる物理力が大きく異なるこの二つの媒体において、海鳥がいかにうまく餌を探し食べているか、その形態と行動の多様性と進化の点から研究しています。海鳥は陸上生活する我々にはなかなか目に触れないので、親しみがないようですが、実は、その研究は極めてやりやすいのです。島で、集団で繁殖するため、そこにいけば色々な研究ができます。また、バイオロギング技術の進歩によって、海上での行動が容易に研究できるようになり、その研究範囲は格段に広がりました。海鳥たちの面白い生活にふれ、彼らの目を通して海洋環境の激変を知る、という新しいアプローチについて学んでください。
