教員からのメッセージ
海藻は、岩や石、貝殻などに付着して移動することなくひそかに生命を維持しているので、皆さんから見るとあまり気にならない地味な生き物かもしれません。しかし、その生き様から、自由に動き回れる海洋動物とは異なる環境応答機構や形態形成機構を発達させていると考えられています。残念ながら現時点ではその実態が良くわかっていないので、海藻を生物学的により深く理解することが必要になっています。それができれば、効率的な物質生産、生態系の維持、さらには養殖の持続性といった応用面の進歩が実現できるはずです。
近年のゲノム解析は、海藻が動物とも陸上植物とも異なる独自の生理制御機構を発達させたことによって海洋環境での生存を可能にしてきたことを示しています。私たちの研究室では、このような誰も知らない新しい生存戦略を解明することを目標に、海藻の基礎生物学的な研究を種々の実験手法の開発を含めて進めています。現在、特に紅藻類を中心に生活環、生殖、形態形成、環境応答などの研究を進めていますが、学生と共に世界で初めての新しい発見の数々にワクワクしているところです。皆さんも自身の力で新しい発見をして、世界に発信してみませんか。
皆さんには、時流やうわさ、周りとのバランスに惑わされずに、自身の信念とこだわりに基づいて勉学に励んでほしいと思います。それを通して、ぜひ生き物に対する興味を深めてください(できれば海藻も)。他の人と違うものを持っていることはとても大事です。そのような皆さんといつか一緒に研究できることを楽しみにしています。
